Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Haryana’s Jind on July 17, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable rail transport.
The pilot train will run on the Jind-Sonipat route and will demonstrate hydrogen fuel cell technology as an effective solution to the traditional diesel locomotive systems. As stated in an official communication, this endeavor is in line with the Indian Railway’s efforts to innovate and reduce emissions towards its net-zero vision.

By undertaking this initiative, India becomes one of the few nations along with Germany, Japan, China, and USA that are investigating the use of hydrogen fuel for their railways.
Why is the hydrogen train important?
The hydrogen fuelled train produces electric power from fuel cells that consume hydrogen and oxygen resulting in water vapor as the by-product. The technology is regarded as one of the cleanest sources of energy alternative to fossil fuel-based railway systems.
In addition, an indigenous hydrogen storage and fuelling station has been set up by Indian Railways at Jind. The necessary license for hydrogen storage and dispensing has been accorded to the Railway by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

Moreover, the railway officials have installed hydrogen leak detection and flame sensors and other security measures at the station.
How will the pilot project operate?
The Jind-Sonipat route has been selected for the initial phase of operations. A dedicated hydrogen compression system has been installed for refuelling, along with standby compressors and technical support infrastructure.
According to the government, approved operation and maintenance manuals prepared by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will guide train operations. During the initial phase, trained technical personnel will accompany the train to ensure smooth functioning.
Along with that, there are also some of the complete safety arrangements like the continuous 24×7 monitoring of the hydrogen fueling station, inspection, safety audit and the use of certified manpower for essential activities.
