New allegations based on interviews with insiders, both present and past, have emerged regarding the technical prowess of Sam Altman, CEO of artificial intelligence company OpenAI, where some employees have accused him of lacking knowledge about coding and fundamentals of machine learning.
Based on a report of The New Yorker, some engineers who have personally worked with Altman view him as more of a strategist than a technologist, stating that his knowledge about programming and machine learning is superficial, and there were even cases wherein he mixed up certain terminologies.

Leadership style under scrutiny
The report, based on multiple interviews, portrays Altman as a figure who has built significant influence through vision, networking and decision-making rather than technical depth. One former researcher, Carroll Wainwright, told The New Yorker that Altman often creates governance structures that he later bypasses when circumstances change.
Another unnamed executive quoted in the report drew a controversial comparison, suggesting there was a “small but real chance” Altman could eventually be viewed in a similar light to disgraced financial figures like Bernie Madoff or Sam Bankman-Fried. The remark reflects internal scepticism but has not been independently verified.
Broader questions about tech leadership
In light of the report, there has been a renewed discussion in the tech sector about whether the CEOs of artificial intelligence firms should be deeply knowledgeable about the technicalities of their operations, or if strategic management skills would suffice.

While Altman dropped out of a computer science program at Stanford University without graduating, he has been hailed for ensuring that OpenAI becomes a leader in the worldwide AI race. In his tenure, the firm has developed highly impactful products and made strategic partnerships with entities such as Microsoft.
However, recent allegations indicate how conflicting interests between technical staff and executive managers can exist in fast-growing AI firms. To date, OpenAI has not issued any public response concerning the allegations outlined in the report.
