Google has officially rolled out Android 17, bringing its latest operating system update to Pixel smartphones first, with other eligible Android devices expected to receive the software over the course of 2026.
The update focuses on improving productivity, entertainment and device security. Google had previewed several of the new features during The Android Show last month and also indicated that select premium devices will receive advanced Gemini-powered intelligence features later this year.
Multitasking gets a major upgrade
One of the key additions in Android 17 is an enhanced version of the “Bubbles” feature, designed to make switching between tasks easier.

Users can now long-press an app icon to convert it into a floating window that remains accessible while using other applications. This allows activities such as watching videos, checking maps or reading notes without leaving the current screen.
For foldable phones and tablets, Google has introduced a dedicated bubble bar that enables quick switching between apps and easier window management.
New gaming and security features
Android 17 also introduces a foldable gaming mode that splits compatible foldable displays into two sections, with gameplay on the upper half and virtual controls on the lower half. Native controller remapping support and improved memory management are also expected to enhance gaming performance.
Security remains a major focus of the update.
A new “Mark as Lost” feature within Find Hub allows users to lock lost devices using biometric authentication, preventing unauthorised access even if someone knows the device passcode.
Other security and privacy additions include:
Temporary precise location sharing for apps
Ability to share selected contacts instead of the entire address book
Enhanced PIN protection with longer delays after repeated failed attempts
Upgraded threat detection tools for identifying suspicious apps and digital threats
Google has also expanded parental controls across Android devices.
Performance and visual improvements
There are also various changes to enhance user experience, like the ability to hide the label of apps from the home screen.
Other new features include more options to customize dark mode, volume customization for virtual assistants and better control over background processes that may slow down the device.

Google stated that the update will help limit the high memory usage by background processes, which will positively impact the device’s speed and efficiency.
