A major fire broke out at Kuwait’s Al-Subiya power generation and water desalination plant on Sunday after Iran launched an attack targeting the facility, as the United States carried out its ninth consecutive night of military strikes on Iranian targets.
Videos circulating on social media, including clips shared by Open Source Intel, showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from the site while flames engulfed parts of the facility. The attack marks another escalation in the ongoing conflict that has increasingly drawn Kuwait into the regional crisis.

Kuwait reports missile and drone interceptions
Kuwait’s armed forces said they detected multiple hostile projectiles entering the country’s airspace during the day.

In a statement, Major General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, said, “The armed forces have detected, since dawn today, hostile ballistic missiles and drones within Kuwaiti airspace, which have been intercepted and dealt with.”
He further said that “the reprehensible Iranian aggression continues to target civilian and vital facilities in the country,” adding that attacks on installations operated by the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy had triggered fires and caused extensive damage.
US launches ninth consecutive night of strikes
As tensions mounted, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed another wave of attacks on Iranian positions.
Posting on X, CENTCOM said, “CENTCOM began conducting a new wave of strikes against Iran at 7 p.m. ET today for the ninth consecutive night. The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”

Before leaving aboard Marine One, US President Donald Trump also referred to the latest military action.
“We hit them very hard again tonight,” Trump said, adding that the strikes were carried out “in honour of” the three US service members killed in the Middle East in recent days.
Conflict continues to widen
Sunday’s strike came after similar attacks on Kuwait’s power and desalination infrastructure were reported on Friday and Saturday.

Kuwait depends heavily on desalination plants to meet its water needs, making such facilities strategically important. Iranian authorities have previously identified locations linked to the US military presence in Kuwait as potential targets.
The latest developments also come as the provisional ceasefire framework reached between Washington and Tehran in June continues to weaken, with both sides stepping up attacks on key energy and transport infrastructure across the region.
