Soon Sunny Deol is left shaken as he watches how partition tears apart lives, with violence, fear and forced migration breaking communities that had lived together peacefully for years.

Sunny, along with his wife played by Preity Zinta and son played by Karan Deol, moves to Pakistan, where they are given a new house to live in.

Ali Fazal’s character welcomes them there. However, they are surprised to find an elderly Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, already living upstairs in the same house.

She refuses to move out and continues to perform her daily puja in a small temple set up in her room, which upsets many people in the neighbourhood.

Sunny’s powerful speech

As tensions build and people pressure the old woman to leave the house, Sunny stands by her side and protects both her and his own family.

When someone questions why he is going to such lengths to protect a Hindu woman, Sunny replies with a strong dialogue.

“Hindu aurat? Woh Maa hai Maa! Maa ko Hindu Muslim mein naa baatiye. Maa apne aap mein ek mazhab hai. Har insaan ka pehla mazhab Maa hai. Har insaan ke mooh se nikla pehla labz Maa hai.”

This translates to, she is not just a Hindu woman, she is a mother. A mother should not be divided on the basis of Hindu or Muslim. A mother is a religion in herself. Every person’s first religion is their mother, and the first word every human speaks is Maa.
