Why did this Air India flight land suddenly in Bhopal? What we know so far

An Air India flight operating between Mumbai and Bhopal made a precautionary landing at Bhopal airport after the crew detected a suspected technical issue mid-air, the airline said on Sunday.

According to Air India, flight AI633 followed standard operating procedures after the alert and landed safely without any incident. All passengers and crew members disembarked normally.

“The crew operating flight AI633 from Mumbai to Bhopal on April 26 decided to make a precautionary landing at Bhopal due to a suspected technical issue as per standard operating procedure,” the airline said in a statement, as reported by ANI.

Passengers safe, checks initiated

The airline confirmed that there were no injuries or disruptions during the landing. The aircraft was subsequently taken for technical inspection while alternative arrangements were made to ensure passengers could continue their journey.

Such precautionary landings are part of aviation safety protocols when even minor anomalies are detected during flight operations.

Fleet upgrade underway

Separately, Air India announced a major milestone in its fleet modernisation programme with the rollout of its first retrofitted twin-aisle Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

The aircraft, registered as VT-ANT, underwent a complete cabin overhaul at Boeing’s Modification Center in Victorville, California, followed by repainting in the airline’s new livery at a certified facility in San Bernardino.

The retrofit included a shift from a two-class to a three-class configuration, installation of new seats, upgraded in-flight entertainment systems and redesigned interiors aligned with Air India’s latest widebody standards.

According to the airline, the upgrade process required over 12,800 man-hours and took approximately 45 days to complete, covering structural, aesthetic and functional improvements across the aircraft.
