A large number of students have opted to appear for the second round of the board exam conducted by the CBSE for Class X students. The figures show that there is an obvious pattern; very few of the candidates appearing again are doing so reluctantly, but to better their marks.
Out of 6,68,854 students who have registered for the 2026 second exam, as many as 5,25,655 have applied specifically for improvement. In comparison, 85,285 candidates fall under the compartment category, while 57,914 have opted for both improvement and compartment.
The figures indicate that the second exam is being used more as an opportunity to enhance marks rather than simply clear failed subjects.
Gender data reflects the same trend
Participation remains higher among male candidates at 4,02,643, while 2,66,209 female candidates have registered. Two students are listed under the ‘other’ category.

Among female candidates, 2,15,215 are appearing for improvement, 31,548 for compartment, and 19,446 for both. For male students, 3,10,439 are seeking improvement, 53,736 are in the compartment category, and 38,468 fall under both. Across categories, the focus on better scores remains consistent.
What makes the second exam important
The second board exams are scheduled from May 15 to May 21, 2026. The date sheet was issued by the board on April 23. Some important processes that took place include the submission of the list of candidates.
It will be noticed this year that there will be two exams for Class X. The first one is compulsory, and the second one is optional, depending on whether you want to improve your grades or clear compartment subjects.

Candidates qualifying in the first attempt can give exams in up to three subjects, which could be Science, Math, Social Studies, or any language. The final marksheet will carry the best score from either attempt.
Results, admissions and next steps
The results of the second examination are expected by the end of June 2026. Those who did not opt for the second attempt can already use their first exam results, declared on April 15 and available on DigiLocker, for admission to Class 11.
Final passing and merit certificates will be issued after the second exam results are declared.
“The introduction of a flexible, multi-opportunity examination system reflects CBSE’s continued commitment to students and academic excellence,” the board said, adding that the move is aimed at reducing performance pressure while offering students additional chances to improve outcomes.
