China’s annual Gaokao examination, regarded as the world’s largest entrance test, concluded this week with around 13 million students appearing over a two-day period. The examination was conducted across the country amid extensive administrative arrangements aimed at ensuring a smooth and disruption-free process.
The Chinese Embassy in India highlighted the scale of the exercise and compared Gaokao to India’s JEE and NEET examinations combined.
“China’s Gaokao — the world’s largest exam & India’s equivalent of JEE/NEET rolled into one — was conducted smoothly for 1.3 crore students in just 2 days,” Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing wrote on X. The spokesperson also praised the nationwide support extended during the examination period.
“Factories paused. Roads quieted. The entire nation rallied for its students,” Yu Jing said.

What is Gaokao?
Gaokao, or the National College Entrance Examination, is China’s primary university entrance test. Conducted every year in early June, it plays a decisive role in admissions to higher education institutions across the country.
The examination generally spans between two and four days and tests students in subjects such as Chinese, Mathematics, and a foreign language, along with other subject combinations depending on the region, NDTV reported.
Authorities across China implemented special measures to minimise distractions during the examination. Traffic restrictions were imposed around examination centres, dedicated transport arrangements were made for candidates, and industrial activity near some venues was reportedly reduced to maintain a quiet environment.

Spotlight on exam management
The remarks from the Chinese Embassy come at a time when competitive examinations in India are under intense scrutiny following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.
The May 3 NEET-UG examination was cancelled after allegations of a paper leak surfaced, prompting protests in several parts of the country. Authorities have scheduled a re-examination on June 21. The investigation into the leak is being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Although the Chinese Embassy did not directly refer to the developments in India, its comments on the successful conduct of Gaokao and the arrangements made for 13 million students have drawn attention amid the ongoing debate over examination management and security.
