Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar may have shattered box office records worldwide, but its theatrical debut in Japan has got off to a slow start. The film, which released in Japanese cinemas on July 10, 2026, drew only around 900 viewers on its opening day despite an extensive promotional campaign before release.

Trade reports suggest that the film also failed to enter Japan’s list of the top 25 films during its opening weekend, highlighting its muted response in the market.

Dhurandhar records modest opening in Japan

According to trade figures, Dhurandhar registered 449 admissions by 2 p.m. on its first day across 57 locations. However, ticket sales remained subdued throughout the rest of the day.

By the end of its opening day, total admissions had reached only about 900, with the film playing across 80 locations. The numbers indicate that the film struggled to attract audiences in Japan despite significant pre-release promotions.

Misses spot among top Indian openers in Japan

With approximately 900 tickets sold on day one, Dhurandhar fell short of entering Japan’s list of the top 10 Indian film openers.

The 10th position is currently held by Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, which recorded 1,300 admissions on its opening day. Reports also note that Pushpa 2 had earlier missed out on securing a place in the same list.

Among Indian films, RRR continues to hold the record for the biggest opening in Japan with 8,230 admissions on day one. It is followed by Saaho, Kalki 2898 AD, Pathaan, Salaar, Jawan, Rangasthalam, Devara, Baahubali 2 and Tiger 3.

Franchise continues to rewrite global box office records

While the Japanese opening has been underwhelming, the franchise has continued its remarkable run at the global box office.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge has earned ₹1,813 crore worldwide, taking the combined collection of both films in the franchise to ₹3,019.35 crore. With this, Dhurandhar has become the first Indian film franchise to cross the ₹3,000 crore mark.

For comparison, the Baahubali franchise has earned ₹2,438 crore globally, while the Pushpa franchise stands at ₹2,092.20 crore, according to Sacnilk.

The film has also emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film without any contribution from Gulf countries and China.
