‘Embarrassing to women’: Social media erupts over Janhvi Kapoor’s role in Peddi

Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, Peddi also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Boman Irani, Divyenndu, and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles, alongside Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor.

Peddi, a sports drama featuring Ram Charan and Janhavi Kapoor, which was released in the theatres on June 4, is facing severe backlash all over the internet due to the ‘over-objectification’ of the female lead, accusing the filmmakers of not writing her character properly.

Female lead poorly written

The criticism is widespread all over the internet, with people not only complaining about how Janhvi Kapoor was shown in a ‘vulgar’ way, but also about how Peddi’s (Ram Charan) actions towards Achiyamma (Janhvi Kapoor) amounted to ‘objectification’. Apart from that, people have also raised concerns about certain scenes from the movie, which were not very ‘decent’ in nature.

The backlash the movie is facing is solely because of how the filmmakers wrote the female lead; as she has no such ‘major role’, she adds little to the narrative and is mainly shown as an ‘object of desire’ for the male characters, limiting her overall impact on the storyline. Viewers are calling out the director and other crew members behind the movie for the problematic visualisation of the female lead, which is embarrassing to every woman in the audience.

One user commented on X, “It’s high time they stop sexualising heroines in films. Literally there’s a scene where hero describes her face but they show her waist and chest,” while another commented, “the heroine deserved a character. Instead she got a string of vulgar, degrading, objectifying scenes stitched together and called a role. It ain’t bold.. it ain’t glamorous.. it’s just poor & cringe writing.. a complete embarrassment to every women in the audience..”
