‘Death to Araghchi’: Protests erupt in Iran over proposed US-Iran peace agreement

Protests erupted in Iran on Saturday as hardliners took to the streets against a proposed peace agreement with the United States. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi came under fire as the demonstrators demanded his resignation.

While Iran has not given an official timeline, US President Donald Trump and Pakistani officials, acting as mediators, signaled towards an agreement between the two warring powers. They reportedly indicated that the framework might be signed by Sunday.

Protests in Iran against peace agreement

Dozens of individuals in the northeast Iranian city of Mashhad assembled outside a foreign ministry office, chanted slogans, and waved red-and-black flags against Foreign Minister Araghachi after the broadcast of a televised interview, where he talked about the proposed treaty with the US, News18 reported.

AFP noted that slogans like “Death to Araghchi, the dishonourable compromiser,” “Araghchi, have shame, stop giving in,” and “Death to dishonourable Araghchi, the infiltrator,” were heard in the protests. People in Tehran had also descended in protest after the foreign minister’s remarks were televised, as per reports.

Demonstrators oppose concessions to US

Protesters reportedly said that Iran is making several concessions in order to get in agreement with the United States. They have said that the agreement might not be in Iran’s best interest and could debilitate the nation’s hold over the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by AFP.

In the televised interview, Abbas Araghchi said that the proposed treaty with the US will be instrumental in lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and added that the administration of the Strait of Hormuz won’t be the same anymore.

While Tehran has not made any official announcement on when the peace agreement will be signed, US President Donald Trump announced that it is due on Sunday. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also confirmed that both parties have agreed to sign the peace treaty, News18 reported.
