The investigation into the devastating fire at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has revealed troubling details about the actions of the property’s owner. Police say the hotel owner saw the building engulfed in flames but did not stop to help, instead driving away from the scene.
The owner allegedly drove past the burning hotel
A day after a massive fire claimed 21 lives at a hotel in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, investigators uncovered a startling detail during questioning of the property’s owner, Lavkesh Bajaj.
According to police sources cited by The Times of India, Bajaj admitted that he had seen the hotel on fire while passing through the area. However, instead of stopping to assess the situation or assist those inside, he allegedly continued driving. When questioned about his actions, he reportedly told investigators that he was frightened and chose not to stop.

Fire tragedy leaves 21 dead
The blaze erupted on June 3 and quickly spread through the hotel building, triggering panic among guests and staff. The incident resulted in the deaths of 21 people, while dozens of others were rescued or treated for injuries. Several victims were reportedly trapped inside as smoke and flames engulfed the structure.
Emergency responders faced significant challenges during rescue operations. Firefighters had to navigate locked spaces and structural obstacles while racing against time to reach those trapped inside the building.
Probe focuses on safety violations
The investigation has also brought the hotel’s safety practices under scrutiny. Authorities are examining whether the establishment complied with fire safety regulations and building norms.
Reports indicate that the property was operating beyond its approved capacity and lacked necessary fire safety clearances. Investigators are also looking into allegations of unauthorised construction and modifications within the building.
Bajaj, who has been arrested, told police that buildings below 15 metres in height do not require a fire department No Objection Certificate (NOC). Authorities are verifying the claim as part of the broader investigation into possible negligence and regulatory violations.

Search underway for hotel manager
As the probe widens, Delhi Police are searching for hotel manager Jai Mishra, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Investigators are also examining the ownership structure, licensing documents and operational records linked to the hotel. ([The Times of India][6])
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the tragedy and announced a crackdown on illegal properties, unauthorised guest houses and establishments that violate fire safety norms. Authorities say accountability will be fixed once the investigation is completed.
