State-owned Nepal Airlines faced sharp criticism after sharing a “network map” on its official social media handles that incorrectly showed the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh within Pakistan’s borders.
The post, uploaded on Wednesday, quickly gained traction on platforms such as X and Facebook. Users flagged the depiction, calling it inaccurate and sensitive. Within a short span, the hashtag #BoycottNepalAirlines began trending, with several users urging India’s external affairs and aviation authorities to take up the matter diplomatically.
Many posts also referenced the long-standing economic and strategic ties between India and Nepal, pointing to India’s role in trade access, employment opportunities, infrastructure support, and disaster assistance over the years.
Khesarilal Yadav calls it ‘provocation’
Among those who criticised the airline was Bhojpuri actor-singer Khesarilal Yadav, who questioned the intent behind the depiction.

“Can anyone tell me what prompted Nepal Airlines to tamper with India’s map like this, and that too regarding Jammu and Kashmir? This isn’t a trivial matter; it seems like a deliberate act. They call this kind of thing provocation,” Yadav tweeted.

Airline deletes post, issues apology
Following the growing backlash, the airline took down the post and released a statement acknowledging the error.
“We sincerely apologise for the error in the network map… The map contained significant cartographic inaccuracies regarding international boundaries,” the airline said.

It added that the depiction does not reflect the official position of Nepal or the airline.
“We deeply value our strong relationships with our neighbours and friends in the region and regret any offence the post has caused,” the statement noted.

The carrier also confirmed that an internal review has been initiated.
Expansion plans amid controversy
The incident comes at a time when Nepal Airlines is working to strengthen its presence in India. In March, it had announced plans to increase frequency on the Kathmandu to Delhi route. Currently operating one daily flight, the airline aims to scale up to 10 flights a week.
The controversy, however, has drawn attention at a sensitive moment as the airline looks to expand its footprint in one of its key markets.
