IMD warned several Indian states about storms, heavy rain and heatwaves this week

IMD warns of storms in north India, heavy rain alert issued for southern coasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather warnings for many parts of India. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are expected in northwest India between May 11 and 14, while heavy rainfall has been predicted in parts of south India for the next seven days.

The weather alerts come as a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the Himalayan region. A low-pressure area may also form over the Bay of Bengal around May 11, which could impact weather conditions in several states across the country.

Western disturbance to trigger storms in north India

According to IMD, scattered rainfall and snowfall are expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from May 11 to 14. Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph are also likely in these regions.

The weather department also warned that hailstorms may hit Jammu and Kashmir on May 11 and 12, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand could see hailstorms on May 12 and 13. Rain is also expected in plains like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh between May 12 and 14.

Heavy rainfall alert for southern states

According to NDTV reports, in southern India, IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala throughout the week. Very heavy rainfall is expected on May 14 and 15 in some areas.

The department has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period due to rough weather conditions along coastal regions.

Eastern states may witness strong winds

According to NDTV reports, strong thundersqualls with wind speeds of up to 70 kmph are expected in Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar during the week. The weather department also predicted isolated hailstorms in Bihar and Jharkhand on Saturday.

At the same time, heatwave conditions are likely to continue in Rajasthan and Gujarat. IMD said west Rajasthan may face heatwave conditions for the next seven days, while Gujarat could continue experiencing extreme heat till May 14.

The highest temperature recorded in the last 24 hours was 44.8C in Phalodi, Rajasthan. IMD also warned that temperatures across northwest and central India may rise by another 3-5C over the coming week.
