Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai on Friday resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and announced plans to launch his own political party, marking a significant political development in the state just weeks after the Assembly election results.
BJP president Nitin Nabin accepted Annamalai’s resignation, ending days of speculation over the former IPS officer’s future within the party.
In a video message released after his resignation was accepted, Annamalai confirmed that his new political movement would contest future elections. “Our political movement will definitely contest the next Assembly elections,” he said.
The announcement comes amid reports that Annamalai had grown unhappy after being replaced as the Tamil Nadu BJP chief following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was later succeeded by Nainar Nagendran.

A new chapter after BJP exit
Popularly known as “Singham” among supporters, Annamalai emerged as one of the BJP’s most recognisable faces in Tamil Nadu after entering politics in 2021 following his resignation from the Indian Police Service.

Though he lost his maiden Assembly election, the BJP leadership elevated him to the post of Tamil Nadu state president. During his tenure, the party improved its vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, although it failed to win a seat in the state.
Speculation over his exit intensified after he was left out of the BJP’s candidate list for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Following the party’s disappointing performance in the polls, rumours of a split gained momentum.
The BJP managed to win just one seat in the election, while its vote share stood at 2.97 per cent, only a marginal improvement over the previous election.
Questions over future political impact
Political observers believe Annamalai’s departure could alter the opposition landscape in Tamil Nadu, especially among younger voters who had backed his aggressive campaign style and anti-corruption messaging.
While details of his proposed party remain unclear, the former BJP leader is expected to outline his roadmap during a press conference later in the day.

Earlier, Annamalai had denied that his absence from the Assembly election was due to being denied a ticket, claiming he had voluntarily chosen not to contest and had informed the party leadership of his decision in writing.
His next political move is likely to be closely watched as Tamil Nadu’s political space continues to evolve following the 2026 Assembly elections.
