Delhi gets soaking rain as thunderstorms finally break heatwave grip

After enduring days of scorching temperatures and heatwave conditions, residents of Delhi finally received relief on Saturday evening as heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed several parts of the city and adjoining NCR regions. Dark clouds gathered over the capital before strong winds and intense showers transformed the weather, bringing down temperatures significantly.

Videos shared across social media captured scenes of heavy rainfall, waterlogged streets and gusty winds sweeping through various localities. The sudden spell of wet weather marked a dramatic shift from the harsh summer conditions that had gripped the city for much of the week.

IMD alert proves accurate

According to NDTV, the change in weather came just hours after the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Delhi and nearby areas. The forecast had warned of moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds, advising residents to remain cautious during the weather activity.

Meteorologists said the current conditions are being driven by an active western disturbance over northwestern India. The system, combined with a cyclonic circulation and increased moisture in the atmosphere, created favourable conditions for widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across the region.

The weather department has now issued a yellow alert for Sunday, indicating that more rain and thunderstorms are likely over the next 24 hours.

Temperatures tumble after heatwave

According to NDTV, the rainfall brought immediate respite from the oppressive heat that had pushed temperatures to uncomfortable levels across the capital. Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was expected to remain around 36 degrees Celsius, significantly lower than the intense heat recorded earlier this week.

The cooling effect of the rain is expected to continue over the coming days, offering relief to residents who had been battling soaring temperatures and high humidity levels.

Advisory for residents

According to NDTV, with thunderstorm activity expected to persist, authorities have urged people to exercise caution. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during periods of intense lightning and strong winds. The IMD has also cautioned against taking shelter under trees, standing near weak structures and leaving electrical appliances plugged in during thunderstorms.

Weather experts believe the ongoing spell could be one of the strongest pre-monsoon weather events of the season, raising hopes of a more comfortable end to May for Delhi and the wider National Capital Region.
