Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the immediate transfer of scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he will continue receiving medical care during his ongoing hunger strike over the NEET paper leak issue.

The court also made it clear that Wangchuk’s treatment at Medanta must follow established medical protocols. It further said that after the transfer, the activist would be required to follow the medical advice provided by the doctors treating him at the private hospital.

The order came while hearing an appeal filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who had challenged an earlier decision of a single judge that declined permission to shift him from Safdarjung Hospital.

During the proceedings, the Centre informed the court that it did not oppose the transfer but stressed that Wangchuk should continue to remain under medical supervision.

“The Centre has no objection to shifting Sonam Wangchuk to Medanta Hospital,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted before the bench. He also requested that Wangchuk “remain under continuous medical supervision and not be discharged except on the advice of Medanta’s doctors.”

The bench also indicated that Wangchuk should be moved along with all his medical records from Safdarjung Hospital to ensure continuity of treatment. It said a formal order would be passed after the post-lunch session.

Hunger strike enters 24th day

Tuesday marked the 24th consecutive day of Wangchuk’s hunger strike, launched over the NEET paper leak controversy. The protest has continued as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) intensified its campaign against the Centre and renewed its demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Supporters also gathered once again at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where the sit-in protest continued for another day. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke joined demonstrators at the venue as the organisation reiterated that its agitation would continue until its demands are addressed.

The latest court order comes at a time when concerns over Wangchuk’s health have grown alongside the prolonged fast, with the High Court ensuring that he receives continued medical attention under specialist care at Medanta Hospital while remaining under the supervision of doctors.
