Delhi High Court refuses bail to mother-in-law accused in young bride’s dowry death case

The Delhi High Court has refused to grant bail to a woman accused in a dowry death case connected to the suicide of her 19-year-old daughter-in-law, observing that the allegations revealed a deeply troubling case of harassment and abuse within months of marriage.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed the bail plea of the mother-in-law while noting that the young woman allegedly faced sustained mental and physical cruelty over an unlawful demand for ₹3 lakh.

The deceased was found hanging at her matrimonial home in November 2024, barely eight months after her wedding.

Court cites serious allegations and witness concerns

According to NDTV, the victim’s family alleged that she had been repeatedly harassed by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands.

The court also referred to an audio conversation recorded hours before the woman’s death, in which she was allegedly heard crying and describing abusive behaviour by her husband. The conversation reportedly included allegations that her clothes were torn during a quarrel and threats were made to publicly humiliate her.

Justice Sharma observed that the material collected during the investigation pointed towards serious allegations that could not be ignored at this stage of the trial.

The court further noted that the forensic report determining the conclusive cause of death was still awaited, and several material witnesses were yet to be examined. Releasing the accused at this point, the court said, could potentially influence witnesses.

Defence argued dispute was unrelated to dowry

According to NDTV, the mother-in-law argued before the court that the deceased had been upset because of a personal dispute with her husband involving an Instagram chat with another woman and not because of dowry-related harassment.

It was also argued that the accused was neither present during the quarrel nor at the time the woman allegedly died by suicide.

However, the High Court held that cases involving the death of a young bride within a short period of marriage required greater judicial caution and careful examination of the surrounding circumstances.

Audio recording and statements examined

According to NDTV, the court noted that statements made by the deceased to her parents and relatives consistently pointed towards repeated harassment over dowry demands.

It also observed that the deceased had allegedly told family members on multiple occasions that she felt ending her life was the only escape from the abuse she was facing.

Police opposed the bail plea, arguing that the mother-in-law was among the principal accused and that witness testimonies indicated continuous pressure and intimidation inside the matrimonial home.
