After days of hot and humid conditions, residents of Delhi-NCR are preparing for a sudden weather turnaround as a powerful Western Disturbance moves across northern India. Meteorologists have warned that the system could trigger intense thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning strikes and periods of heavy rain during the evening and overnight hours.
The development comes amid weather conditions across several northern states, with atmospheric instability increasing rapidly over the region.
Powerful Western Disturbance behind weather change
According to India Today, the primary driver of the expected storm activity is a strong Western Disturbance, a weather system that originates near the Mediterranean region and travels eastward towards the Indian subcontinent.
Such systems are commonly associated with winter rainfall and snowfall across northern India. However, the current disturbance has arrived during the pre-monsoon season, when surface temperatures remain exceptionally high. This combination of cold upper-level air and intense ground heating creates ideal conditions for severe thunderstorms.
Meteorologists have also identified a cyclonic circulation over parts of northwestern India, further enhancing the potential for widespread storm activity.

Relief from heat, but not a winter-like drop
According to India Today, despite expectations of a noticeable temperature decline, weather experts say residents should not expect winter conditions. The rainfall and strong winds will likely bring a sharp drop in temperatures compared to recent days, offering much-needed respite from the heatwave-like conditions.
However, the heat stored in the ground and the overall seasonal climate will prevent temperatures from falling to levels typically experienced during winter. Instead, residents can expect cooler and more comfortable weather for a short period following the storms.

Lightning and strong winds remain major concerns
According to India Today, forecasters warn that the greatest risks tonight will come from lightning strikes, sudden wind gusts and localised heavy rainfall. These conditions may lead to temporary disruptions in traffic movement, flight operations and electricity supply in some areas.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during periods of intense thunderstorm activity, avoid taking shelter under trees and stay away from exposed structures during lightning events.
With the storm system expected to remain active through the night, Delhi-NCR could witness one of the most significant weather events of the pre-monsoon season, bringing dramatic skies, cooler temperatures and much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat.
