A spell of intense rain and thunderstorms swept across Delhi-NCR on Thursday, disrupting flight operations and forcing several aircraft bound for the national capital to divert to Jaipur. The sudden deterioration in weather conditions reduced visibility and complicated landing operations, leading airlines to reroute flights as a precaution.
The disruption came as large parts of Delhi witnessed much-needed rainfall after enduring weeks of oppressive heat. Dark clouds, strong winds and heavy showers transformed the city’s weather within hours, bringing temporary respite to residents but creating challenges for air traffic movement.
Multiple flights rerouted as weather worsens
According to NDTV, at least four flights scheduled to land in Delhi were diverted to Jaipur after adverse weather conditions made operations difficult at the capital’s airport.
The affected services included flights arriving from destinations such as Amritsar, Phuket and Kolkata. Airline operations teams closely monitored conditions as thunderstorms and gusty winds moved across the region, prompting diversions to ensure passenger safety.
Weather-related diversions are common during severe thunderstorm activity, particularly when visibility drops sharply or wind conditions make safe landings difficult. Airport authorities and airlines worked to manage schedules as conditions evolved through the afternoon.

Rain brings relief from scorching temperatures
While the weather disrupted travel plans, it also brought welcome relief to millions across Delhi-NCR. Several areas, including Alipur, Shahdara, Civil Lines, Model Town and Dilshad Garden, received moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
According to NDTV, the showers helped bring down temperatures that had remained near the 40-degree Celsius mark in recent days. Residents reported noticeably cooler conditions after the storm passed through the city.
The change in weather followed days of intense heat, with temperatures across the region remaining above seasonal comfort levels. The rainfall offered temporary respite and improved outdoor conditions in many neighbourhoods.

IMD warns of more storm activity
The India Meteorological Department had earlier warned of thunderstorms, lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds across Delhi and adjoining NCR areas. Weather officials also cautioned that wind speeds could rise significantly during storm activity.
Although Thursday’s rainfall provided relief, meteorologists note that Delhi continues to face a rainfall deficit for the month. Despite widespread showers in several localities, official rainfall figures remain below normal levels for this period.
According to NDTV, forecasters expect temperatures to remain relatively moderate over the next few days, though conditions are likely to fluctuate as weather systems continue to influence north India. Additional spells of rain and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, especially during evening and nighttime hours.
For travellers, authorities have advised checking flight schedules before heading to the airport, as weather-related delays and operational adjustments may continue if storm activity persists over the region.
