Delhi to get more storms, Mumbai on alert as monsoon reaches Kerala

The southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over Kerala around June 4, signalling the start of India’s annual rainy season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As the monsoon advances, several parts of the country are likely to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds and spells of heavy rainfall over the coming days.

While southern India prepares for widespread rain activity, weather systems are also expected to impact northern, western and eastern regions through the week.

Delhi-NCR to see thunderstorms, strong winds

Residents of Delhi and neighbouring states may continue to witness unstable weather conditions until June 6. The IMD said on X on Tuesday that scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph is likely across Delhi and parts of northwest India.

The weather department has also warned of thundersqualls over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on June 3 and 4, with wind speeds expected to reach 50-60 kmph and gust up to 70 kmph.

Rajasthan faces dust storm risk

Thunderstorm activity is also forecast across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Isolated hailstorms are likely in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan on June 3 and 4.

In western Rajasthan, dust storm activity may occur at isolated locations on June 3, adding to the weather-related disruptions expected across the region.

Mumbai, Pune under yellow alert

Weather activity is intensifying across western India as the monsoon edges closer. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Gujarat between June 2 and June 6.

Mumbai and Pune have been placed under a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning and squally weather on June 3. Meanwhile, Amravati, Kolhapur, Satara, Aurangabad and Jalna are under an orange alert. Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra could witness thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 70 kmph, while isolated hailstorms are possible over Madhya Maharashtra.

Kerala, southern states likely to remain wettest

Southern India is expected to receive some of the season’s most significant rainfall this week. Kerala is likely to record isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 2 to 8. Heavy showers are also forecast across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are expected in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Parts of Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh may experience thundersqualls until June 4. Kerala remains under an orange alert for June 4, the likely date of monsoon onset.

Rainfall outlook for Northeast and central India

The IMD has forecast widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning across Northeast India over the next five days. Heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh until June 8 and across Assam and Meghalaya between June 5 and 8.

In eastern and central India, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are expected to witness thunderstorms and gusty winds during the week. Severe thundersqualls are likely in parts of Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, while isolated hailstorm activity has also been forecast in Madhya Pradesh.
