G7 summit 2026: Modi, Trump and Zelenskyy converge in France as wars, trade and AI dominate agenda

Global leaders have assembled in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains for the 2026 G7 Summit, where a packed agenda combining wars, trade disputes, artificial intelligence and economic uncertainty is expected to dominate discussions over the next two days.

The summit arrives at a particularly sensitive moment. A newly announced framework between the United States and Iran to end months of hostilities has reshaped diplomatic priorities, while Ukraine is seeking to regain international attention amid fears that the Middle East crisis could overshadow its prolonged war with Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the summit as an invited leader and is also scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on June 17, with trade negotiations expected to take centre stage.

Iran deal and Strait of Hormuz security take priority

News 18 noted that the recently announced US-Iran framework agreement has dramatically altered the mood ahead of the summit.

Leaders are expected to seek greater clarity on the agreement’s implementation, timelines and its long-term viability. One of the biggest concerns remains the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supplies pass.

The reopening of the strait following months of instability will be a major discussion point, with France and Britain reportedly prepared to assist in maritime security operations and tanker escort missions if necessary.

European leaders are also expected to push for renewed discussions on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, even as tensions appear to be easing.

Ukraine seeks renewed support amid shifting global focus

News 18 mentioned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will use the summit to reinforce Ukraine’s position as international attention increasingly shifts to the Middle East.

Zelenskyy is expected to argue that Russia has failed to achieve its military objectives and that renewed diplomatic efforts should now be pursued. European allies are likely to urge Trump to maintain support for Kyiv while exploring new avenues for negotiation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The discussions will also focus on burden-sharing, with Europe highlighting its increased financial and military support for Ukraine over the past year.

Analysts believe Ukraine is entering the summit with greater confidence compared to previous years, especially after several battlefield gains and stronger European backing.

Modi-Trump meeting to spotlight India-US trade deal

For India, one of the most closely watched developments will be the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump.

The two leaders are expected to review progress on an ambitious bilateral trade agreement that has been under negotiation for several months. Discussions may cover market access, tariffs, energy cooperation and strategic investments.

The meeting also comes against a backdrop of disagreements over US tariff measures, India’s energy ties with Russia and Trump’s previous claims about mediating the India-Pakistan conflict, which New Delhi has repeatedly denied.

Beyond trade, Modi is expected to participate in wider discussions on artificial intelligence governance, sustainable economic growth and partnerships with developing nations.

Artificial intelligence, China’s economic influence and the growing debt burden of emerging economies will also feature prominently throughout the summit as G7 leaders attempt to build consensus on some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
