The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday accused Pakistan of attempting to deflect attention from the deteriorating situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) by circulating what it described as misleading narratives and fabricated content.
Speaking during a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had taken note of reports emerging from PoK that point to growing unrest, police action against protesters, and allegations of human rights violations.
“There is a pattern of fake news and videos emanating from Pakistan,” Jaiswal said, alleging that such content was being used to distract from developments on the ground in the region.
India raises concerns over reported police action
According to the MEA, reports indicate that multiple people have been killed and many others injured during recent clashes involving protesters and security personnel in PoK.
“This appears to be a desperate attempt by Pakistan to cover up its own failings and deflect attention away from its human rights abuses,” Jaiswal said.
The spokesperson further urged the international community to closely monitor developments in the region and hold Pakistan accountable for alleged violations.
“We hope that the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for its misdeeds and abuses,” he added.

Violence erupts ahead of planned protest
According to News 18, the remarks come against the backdrop of violent confrontations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir involving supporters of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). This civil society platform has been campaigning on issues ranging from economic rights to political representation.
According to local authorities, tensions escalated after supporters gathered outside a hospital mortuary following the death of a JAAC member. Security forces subsequently moved to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes.
Officials claimed that armed individuals opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four police personnel and a civilian passerby. Authorities said six protesters were killed during the ensuing operation and dozens of people were arrested.
However, JAAC members and supporters have accused the authorities of using excessive force and have challenged official casualty figures.

Growing discontent in the region
According to News 18, the JAAC has emerged as a prominent voice in recent protests over economic hardship, electricity shortages, unemployment, inflation and the reservation of legislative seats in the region.
The organisation has also opposed restrictions imposed by authorities, including internet shutdowns and its designation under anti-terrorism provisions.
The latest violence has intensified scrutiny of the political and human rights situation in PoK, with competing narratives emerging from protesters, local authorities and regional stakeholders.
