India, Indonesia hold key talks as foreign ministers meet after four-year gap

India and Indonesia have moved to further strengthen their strategic partnership as Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono arrived in New Delhi for the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting, marking the first such ministerial-level review of bilateral ties in four years.

The visit comes at a significant moment in relations between the two countries, which have steadily expanded cooperation in areas ranging from trade and investment to defence, maritime security and regional diplomacy. Sugiono is leading a high-level delegation that includes Indonesian lower house representative Marlyn Maisarah.

Focus on strengthening a growing partnership

According to The Hindu, welcoming his Indonesian counterpart, S. Jaishankar noted that substantial progress had been made in bilateral relations since the last Joint Commission Meeting.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of recent high-level exchanges, particularly the discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during the latter’s state visit to India ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.

The Joint Commission Meeting is expected to assess the implementation of decisions taken during that visit and identify new areas for collaboration.

Building on strategic and regional cooperation

According to The Hindu, India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, reflecting growing convergence on regional and global issues.

Both countries play influential roles in the Indo-Pacific and have increasingly coordinated their positions on maritime security, connectivity and economic cooperation. The latest round of talks is expected to explore opportunities in defence partnerships, digital connectivity, energy security and people-to-people exchanges.

Officials say the discussions will also focus on strengthening economic ties and expanding cooperation in emerging sectors that are becoming increasingly important to both economies.

Shared role in the Indo-Pacific

According to The Hindu, the meeting also carries broader regional significance. India and Indonesia are key stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific and actively participate in ASEAN-led initiatives aimed at promoting stability and economic growth across the region.

Their cooperation has gained added importance through frameworks such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2026-2030, which seeks to deepen engagement between India and Southeast Asia.
