India on Friday conducted the successful flight-test of an advanced Agni missile featuring Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology off the Odisha coast, per a News18 report.
The test demonstrated the missile’s ability to carry multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile was launched from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on May 8. According to the Ministry, the advanced Agni missile was “flight-tested with multiple payloads, targeted to different targets spatially distributed over a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region”.
The missile is equipped with MIRV capability, a technology that enables a single missile to carry several warheads and strike multiple targets independently. The development significantly strengthens India’s strategic strike and deterrence capability.

Tracking stations monitored the entire mission
According to the Defence Ministry, telemetry and tracking were done using various land-based and maritime-based stations. All telemetry and tracking were done from the point where the missile launched up to its final impact.
“Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were met during the trial,” the Ministry said.
The successful trial was witnessed by senior scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and personnel from the Indian Army. The missile system has been developed by DRDO laboratories with support from Indian industries.

Rajnath Singh congratulates DRDO and the Army
Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army and industry partners after the successful test.
“This will add an incredible capability to the country’s defence preparedness against the growing threat perceptions,” he said.

Why is MIRV capability important?
Through MIRV technology, a single missile can launch numerous warheads once it reaches outer space, each warhead moving separately toward various destinations. It is not necessary to fire several missiles at different destinations, making the missiles harder to intercept by the enemy’s defence system.
With the test firing, India has become part of a small number of nations with missile systems equipped with MIRV technology.
