India strengthens regional ties through high-level talks with Myanmar and Nepal

India has stepped up diplomatic outreach to neighbouring countries with recent engagements involving leaders from Myanmar and Nepal. The move reflects New Delhi’s emphasis on strengthening regional partnerships while addressing security, connectivity and economic priorities.

India renews neighbourhood focus

India has signalled a renewed emphasis on its neighbourhood diplomacy through recent engagements with leaders from Myanmar and Nepal, according to Hindustan Times.

The outreach comes as the government seeks to strengthen ties across South Asia and its immediate region while advancing security and economic interests.

Neighbourhood remains a key priority

Per an HT report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the Ministry of External Affairs to devote greater attention to neighbouring countries. India’s leadership believes the country cannot be regarded as a global power without maintaining strong relationships across the subcontinent.

The renewed focus is evident in India’s engagement with Myanmar and Nepal. Per a report by HT, New Delhi has rolled out the red carpet for Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing and welcomed outreach from Nepal’s political leadership.

Security and connectivity concerns

India’s engagement with Myanmar is closely linked to security concerns in the Northeast. During talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Hlaing, issues such as border security, insurgent activities and connectivity projects were discussed. Myanmar assured India that its territory would not be used against India’s security interests.

The two sides also reviewed long-pending infrastructure projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. These projects are seen as important for improving regional connectivity and economic integration.

Focus on Nepal ties

Nepal’s political figures expressed views in favour of greater cross-border, air and infrastructure connectivity between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi has consistently advocated closer ties with Nepal and supports deeper economic integration with the Himalayan nation.

India is reportedly seeking stronger engagement with neighbouring countries while remaining firm on key issues involving Pakistan and China. New Delhi continues to prioritise ties with countries such as Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Myanmar as part of its broader regional strategy.

The visits and diplomatic exchanges are being viewed as an indication that India is prepared to deepen engagement with its neighbours in pursuit of its national interests and regional stability.
