India and the United States will begin a fresh round of trade negotiations in New Delhi on Monday as senior officials from both countries seek to advance an interim trade agreement that could reshape economic ties between the two strategic partners. The talks, scheduled to continue for four days, are expected to focus on resolving key issues related to market access, tariffs, customs procedures, investment promotion and broader economic cooperation.
Negotiators look to finalise an interim agreement
According to NDTV, the American delegation will be led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, will head India’s team. The meeting follows months of discussions after both sides agreed in February on a framework for the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement.
Officials are expected to work on the legal and operational details of the proposed interim pact. The agreement is viewed as an important stepping stone towards a more comprehensive trade arrangement between the two countries. Both governments have repeatedly emphasised the importance of strengthening commercial ties as trade volumes continue to grow.

Tariff changes force fresh assessment
According to NDTV, the negotiations take place against a significantly altered trade backdrop. Earlier expectations surrounding tariff reductions were complicated after changes in US trade policy and legal developments affecting tariff measures introduced by President Donald Trump.
As a result, officials from both countries are expected to reassess portions of the earlier framework. Trade experts believe the new tariff environment could require adjustments to commitments discussed in previous rounds of negotiations.
The discussions will also examine concerns related to non-tariff barriers and regulatory issues that often affect bilateral trade. Both sides are expected to explore ways to simplify procedures and reduce obstacles for businesses operating across the two markets.

Trade, energy and investment high on agenda
According to NDTV, India has indicated its willingness to expand imports of American products across several sectors, including energy, aviation, technology and industrial goods. New Delhi has also proposed tariff reductions on a range of US products, including agricultural and food items.
The talks come at a time when the United States remains one of India’s most important trading partners. Policymakers on both sides view the negotiations as an opportunity to deepen economic engagement while addressing long-standing trade concerns.
