Indian Air Force raises alarm over viral Leh airport clips, calls for stricter action

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has expressed concern over the increasing circulation of photographs and videos from sensitive zones around Leh Airport on social media, warning that such content could pose serious operational security challenges.

The issue was discussed during a high-level interdepartmental meeting chaired by Nidhi Malik, Administrative Secretary, Civil Aviation Ladakh. The meeting was called following concerns previously communicated by the Air Force to the Lieutenant Governor’s office regarding matters affecting aviation operations at Leh.

According to Air Force representatives, there has been a noticeable rise in unauthorised photography and videography in and around restricted airport areas. Many of these visuals are later uploaded to social media platforms, making sensitive locations publicly accessible.

Leh Airport holds strategic importance for the Indian Air Force due to its location and high-altitude operational role. Officials noted that images and videos revealing operational zones can compromise the confidentiality required for military and aviation activities.

Authorities asked to strengthen enforcement

Addressing the issue, officials said, “In response, the Administrative Secretary directed the concerned agencies to strengthen enforcement of existing regulations, undertake public awareness initiatives regarding restricted areas, and formulate appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at preventing unauthorised photography and videography in sensitive locations.”

With tourist arrivals in Leh continuing to grow, videos of aircraft landing and taking off have frequently gained traction online. Even recordings captured from outside the airport perimeter often provide clear views of the runway and aircraft stationed there. The runway itself is considered strategically significant for Air Force operations.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Airports Authority of India, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Public Works Department (PWD), Power Development Department (PDD), Revenue Department, Urban Development Department and the Wildlife Department.

Focus on airport expansion and flight safety

Officials also agreed that any new CCTV systems or monitoring equipment proposed near Air Force installations must undergo proper clearance procedures to ensure security concerns are addressed.

“The objective was to comprehensively assess matters affecting the safe, secure, and efficient functioning of aviation operations at Leh Airport and to identify actionable measures for their timely resolution,” officials said.
