A 20-year-old student, who was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) died due to a fall from a building in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Reports from The Economic Times indicate that incident came just days before the rescheduled NEET-UG exam, which is why police has commenced investigation into the circumstances of the death.

Incident under investigation

In the wake of allegations of irregularities in the original test, the student was to appear for the NEET-UG examination again. In response to the information received about the fall, police were able to reach the location and begin an investigation.

The exact circumstances in which the incident occurred has yet to be determined, officials have said to the Hindustan Times. The investigation is taking place after considering evidence, and interviewing family members and associates. So far, no conclusion has been made.

Stress takes spotlight

The tragedy comes at a time when the anxiety level of many NEET aspirants have risen with the cancellation of the previous exam and the announcement of the re-test. The incidents in recent times in which students preparing for the medical entrance exam have resurfaced the issue of academic stress and mental health support for young aspirants.

NEET-UG 2026 was a scheduled examination in May, but was canceled due to allegations of a paper leak. A re-examination will be conducted, which will impact lakhs of students nationwide.

Police awaits findings

No further details of the investigation have been released. The student’s body was taken for post-mortem and further action will be based on the results of the investigation, authorities said. Police is still collecting information about the case.

The whole incident sparked a revival in the discussions on psychological and emotional pressure that students are facing during the preparation of the very competitive exams in India.
