Passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport could soon see major changes in how they move between terminals, with airport authorities working on a new transit system designed to make inter-terminal transfers quicker and far less stressful. The proposed infrastructure upgrade includes dedicated airside bus transfers between terminals and an underground pedestrian walkway linking Terminal 2 with the Airport Metro station.
The move comes as passenger traffic at Delhi airport continues to grow rapidly, putting pressure on existing transfer systems that often involve long walks or slow bus rides through city traffic.
Airside transfer system aims to cut travel time
According to News 18, airport officials are planning to introduce special airside bus connectivity between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Unlike current shuttle services that operate through public roads, these buses would run within the airport’s restricted operational zone, allowing passengers to transfer without exiting the airport premises.
Authorities are reportedly considering a hub-and-spoke model to streamline movement between terminals. The proposal has already been submitted to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security for approval.
At present, passengers travelling from T1 to T3 can spend nearly half an hour in traffic during peak hours. Even transfers between T2 and T3 often involve lengthy walks followed by repeated security checks. The proposed airside system is expected to significantly reduce both transit time and inconvenience, particularly for passengers with connecting flights.

Underground walkway to improve metro access
Another major improvement under development is an underground pedestrian corridor connecting Terminal 2 directly to the Airport Metro station. Currently, passengers arriving by metro must walk roughly 750 metres to reach T2, often carrying heavy luggage through crowded areas.
Once completed, the underground passage is expected to reduce the walking distance to around 80 metres, bringing transfer time down to less than five minutes. Airport officials believe the corridor will especially help passengers during extreme weather conditions and rush hours.
Relief expected for domestic travellers
Terminal 2 currently handles domestic operations for carriers including IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air, while Terminal 3 manages both domestic and international traffic.
With the airport handling increasing passenger volumes every year, officials say the broader objective is to create a smoother transit experience and reduce congestion across terminals. However, the rollout timeline will depend heavily on security clearances before the new systems can become operational later this year.
