Meta deepens India AI push with Reliance-backed Jamnagar data centre

Meta has taken a significant step in strengthening its artificial intelligence footprint in India by partnering with Reliance Industries to develop its first AI-enabled data centre in the country. The move reflects the growing importance of India in the global AI race and highlights the increasing demand for computing infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation AI applications.

Under the agreement, Reliance Industries will construct a 168-megawatt data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which will be leased by Meta. The facility is expected to serve as a key hub for AI workloads, cloud services and large-scale data processing. The agreement also provides Meta with the flexibility to expand capacity as demand grows in the future.

India emerges as a strategic AI destination

According to India Today, the decision underscores India’s growing relevance in the global technology ecosystem. With one of the world’s largest internet user bases and a rapidly expanding digital economy, India has become an attractive destination for companies seeking to scale AI operations.

Artificial intelligence models require enormous computing power, advanced storage capabilities and reliable data infrastructure. As AI adoption accelerates across industries, technology firms are increasingly investing in dedicated facilities to support these requirements. Meta views India as a crucial market not only for its consumer platforms but also for its long-term AI ambitions.

Expanding a relationship built over years

According to India Today, the latest partnership is another chapter in the evolving relationship between Meta and Reliance. Their collaboration gained momentum in 2020 when Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, one of the largest foreign investments in India’s technology sector at the time.

The partnership expanded further in 2025 when both companies joined hands to develop enterprise-focused AI solutions using Meta’s Llama models. By combining Meta’s AI capabilities with Reliance’s infrastructure and digital reach, the companies aimed to create AI tools tailored for Indian businesses.

The Jamnagar data centre project now adds a critical infrastructure component to that collaboration, giving Meta a physical foundation for its AI operations in the country.

Data centre boom gathers pace

According to India Today, India’s data centre industry is witnessing rapid growth, fuelled by increasing internet penetration, cloud adoption and AI-driven computing needs. Industry estimates suggest the sector could nearly double in value over the coming decade as businesses and consumers generate unprecedented volumes of digital data.

For Reliance, the project strengthens its ambitions in digital infrastructure and AI services. For Meta, it provides a strategic base to support future AI development in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets. Together, the partnership signals that India is becoming an increasingly important battleground in the global AI infrastructure race.
