The Indian Air Force will begin participating in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 on Monday at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Darwin, joining a large multinational air combat drill that runs until August 7.

Pitch Black is the RAAF’s premier biennial multinational air combat exercise, named for its focus on night flying over the vast unpopulated areas of northern Australia.

This edition brings together a large number of participating forces for complex large-force employment and multinational air combat operations.

IAF contingent arrives in Australia

The IAF contingent has already arrived in Australia.

The contingent comprises four Rafale fighter aircraft, two C-17 transport aircraft and more than 120 air warriors. The exercise will bring together air forces from 19 nations, including the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Japan and South Korea.

The Ministry of Defence release said the IAF contingent includes pilots, engineers, technicians, controllers and other subject matter experts.

Fine margins, grand ambitions

The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability, strengthen force integration and facilitate the exchange of operational best practices.

It also gives participating air forces an opportunity to validate expeditionary air operations over extended distances and strengthen professional partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

The Defence Ministry said the air forces involved will operate in a realistic and challenging multinational environment, with the aim of improving operational synergy and mutual understanding.

Why does Pitch Black matter for the IAF?

The Indian Air Force has taken part in previous editions of Pitch Black in 2018, 2022 and 2024, underscoring what the ministry described as India’s commitment to defence cooperation and regional security.

Exercise commander Air Commodore Matthew McCormack described Pitch Black 2026 as the Royal Australian Air Force’s largest collective training activity with partner and allied nations, saying, “It’s where we plan together, fight together and learn together through realistic and complex training scenarios.”

With the 2026 edition now underway, India’s Rafales will train alongside partner forces in one of the Indo-Pacific’s most closely watched air exercises.
