Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built naval vessels and formally handed them over to the Indian Navy at Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. The vessels, INS Dunagiri, INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak, have been built using indigenous technology at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
Highlighting India’s growing focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Prime Minister said the country’s naval capabilities are being strengthened through homegrown technology and innovation.
‘Naval strength is essential for a strong nation’
Addressing the gathering, Modi underlined the importance of maritime power in national security.
“A nation’s strength cannot grow without naval power. The Navy is a key pillar of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. INS Dunagiri will enhance the capabilities of the Indian Navy,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that India has steadily increased its dependence on indigenous technology across all branches of the armed forces. According to him, the commissioning of the three vessels reflects the country’s progress towards defence self-reliance.
“India is moving towards a new era of maritime strength. Our capabilities will continue to grow in the future. Self-reliance defines our strength,” Modi added.
INS Dunagiri: Advanced Project 17A frigate
INS Dunagiri is the fifth frigate under Project 17A and the second vessel of its class to be built by GRSE in Kolkata.
The warship is equipped with the BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system along with a medium-range surface-to-air missile system. The vessel is expected to add to the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in maritime defence.

INS Agray: Built for anti-submarine operations
INS Agray is an indigenous Arnala-class warship designed for anti-submarine warfare.
The vessel has been developed to detect and neutralise enemy submarines, particularly in shallow waters. It is equipped with torpedoes, rocket launchers and advanced shallow-water warfare systems.
INS Sanshodhak: Survey vessel for maritime mapping
INS Sanshodhak is a hydrographic survey vessel built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. It is the fourth and final ship of the Sandhayak-class series.
The vessel is designed to carry out hydrographic surveys in coastal and deep-sea regions. Its role includes seabed mapping, assisting in navigation route planning and supporting maritime security operations.
