After days of relentless heat, there may finally be some relief in sight for large parts of north India. The India Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several states starting May 28, bringing a possible dip in temperatures.
Heatwave grips Delhi and Uttar Pradesh
Delhi continues to reel under intense heat, with temperatures across the city, including areas from India Gate to Palam, hovering between 45C and 46C. On May 27, the sky is expected to remain clear, with maximum temperatures ranging from 44C to 46C and minimum temperatures staying high between 27C and 29C.

Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh is facing even harsher conditions. Cities such as Banda, Prayagraj and Varanasi have recorded extreme temperatures between 47C and 48C, making it one of the most affected regions during this heatwave phase.
Rain and thunderstorms likely from May 28
According to the IMD, weather conditions are set to change from May 28 onwards. Delhi is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on May 28 and 29, accompanied by strong winds and lightning activity. On May 29, wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph, along with thunderstorms.
Rainfall may occur more than once during the day, particularly in the afternoon and night hours, offering intermittent relief from the heat.
The shift in weather is linked to an active western disturbance over the Himalayan region. This system has already triggered rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir, and is now expected to influence plains across north India.

Alerts across multiple states
The IMD has issued widespread alerts for several states:
Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir are likely to witness light to heavy rainfall between May 28 and 30.
Himachal Pradesh may receive rain on May 28 and 29.
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh are expected to see light to moderate rainfall with lightning and winds of 40 to 50 kmph between May 28 and 31.
Strong thunderstorms with wind speeds up to 80 kmph are likely in western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on May 28 and 29 .
Eastern Uttar Pradesh may experience similar conditions on May 29.
Rajasthan and central India under alert
In Rajasthan, the IMD has warned of rainfall, lightning and strong winds from May 28 to 30. Dust storms may intensify and develop into large-scale windstorms during this period.
Madhya Pradesh is also expected to receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms between May 28 and 30. Similar conditions are forecast in Chhattisgarh until May 30.
Meanwhile, the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra is likely to witness heavy rainfall for three consecutive days from May 28 to May 30.
With multiple regions under weather alerts, authorities have advised residents to stay cautious, especially during thunderstorms and strong wind activity.
