‘Need of the hour’: PM Modi warns amid West Asia turmoil, says ‘use fuel carefully’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to use petroleum products judiciously as tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global fuel supplies.

Speaking in Hyderabad, he said the situation made restraint in consumption especially important for an import-dependent economy like India.

The remarks came as the Strait of Hormuz blockade and the wider US-Iran conflict have tightened energy markets and raised concerns over supply stability.

PM urges caution on petrol, diesel amid oil shock

Modi said it was the “need of the hour” to use petrol, gas, and diesel “with great restraint,” adding that imported petro products should be used only as needed. He said such caution would “save foreign exchange” and reduce the impact of the war on India’s economy.

The message echoed the government’s broader effort to encourage lower dependence on imported fuels amid volatile international crude prices.

Solar, ethanol and CNG push framed as energy shield

The prime minister also pointed to India’s push in solar power, ethanol blending, LPG expansion, and CNG infrastructure as part of a wider energy-security strategy.

He said these measures had helped the country navigate the current crisis and reduce pressure from global disruptions. Modi noted that India has emerged among the world’s leading nations in solar power generation.

₹9,400 crore development push in Telangana

Modi made the remarks while inaugurating and laying the foundation for development projects worth around ₹9,400 crore in Telangana.

The projects include highway, railway, and textile infrastructure initiatives.

The package featured work on the Hyderabad–Panaji Economic Corridor, railway multi-tracking, a greenfield petroleum terminal, and the PM MITRA Park at Warangal.

The projects underway are likely to improve road connectivity, ease freight movement, and expand industrial capacity in Telangana.

The four-laning of NH-167 on the Hyderabad–Panaji Economic Corridor should help smoother traffic flow and faster movement of goods, while the Kazipet–Vijayawada railway multi-tracking project is expected to strengthen rail capacity and reduce bottlenecks on a busy route.

Through the center’s “5F” concept, the PM MITRA Park at Warangal, India’s first fully operational PM MITRA park, aims to strengthen the textile value chain and increase exports.
