Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has questioned his admission to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, claiming that no treatment is currently underway and alleging that the hospital has not shared his medical reports with the family. Her remarks came a day after Wangchuk was shifted to the government hospital following concerns over his health during his ongoing hunger strike.
Angmo has maintained that the Delhi High Court’s order only required authorities to monitor Wangchuk’s health and did not direct that he be hospitalised. She has also requested that he be transferred to a medical facility chosen by the family.
Family seeks transparency over medical reports
Angmo said that only observations and diagnostic tests were being conducted at the hospital.
“No treatment is underway right now. Only observation and tests are being conducted,” she said.
She further alleged that the hospital had not provided the family with copies of Wangchuk’s medical reports despite repeated requests. According to her, the family intends to have some of the tests independently verified before consenting to any medication.

Dispute over potassium level
Angmo also questioned the hospital’s reported potassium readings. She claimed Wangchuk’s potassium level had measured 4.3 on July 17 but that the family was later verbally informed it had dropped to 2.9 without being shown supporting reports.
“Since they aren’t providing the reports we requested, we want to cross-check this with another lab before administering any medication,” she said.
She added that no oral medicines, intravenous fluids or other treatment should be administered without the family’s consent until the reports are shared.
Authorities cite health concerns
Delhi Police have maintained that Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on medical advice after his health deteriorated during his hunger strike. Hospital authorities have since stated that he is stable but remains weak due to prolonged fasting and requires continuous monitoring.
The developments have intensified the political debate surrounding Wangchuk’s protest, with supporters demanding greater transparency over his medical care while authorities continue to emphasise that the move was made in the interest of his health.
