Employees of the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club are facing uncertainty after the Centre ordered the elite institution to vacate its premises in Lutyens’ Delhi. The decision has sparked concern among staff members, many of whom fear losing their jobs if the club is forced to shut down or relocate suddenly.
Employees worried about their future
Workers at the club said the eviction notice has created panic among employees and support staff. Many have spent years working at the institution and now fear for their livelihoods. As quoted by NDTV the Union chief said,”Employees have been calling continuously… asking where they will go. As soon as we got the news, staff were in shock… ‘what will happen to our families’?”

Several employees also expressed concern that any relocation could lead to downsizing or job losses. “Many of us have worked here for over three decades… some have been working here for 15 years, some for 20. We do not know how we will support our families,” one worker said to NDTV.

The Centre has reportedly asked the club to vacate the 27.3-acre property near the Prime Minister’s residence by early June. The move has triggered legal and administrative discussions between the government and the club authorities.
Club seeks government clarification
The Delhi Gymkhana Club management has approached the government seeking clarity on the eviction order and asking whether an alternative location would be provided. A worker said to NDTV, “We want to ask the government… we are 500 employees and families. We didn’t get any notice… they didn’t tell us anything,” another worker also said, “They only came and told us the club will be shut down on June 5… we have been working here for the past 35-40 years.”

Founded in 1913 as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club, the institution remains one of the most prestigious social clubs in the national capital. Over the years, it has been associated with senior bureaucrats, diplomats and influential public figures.
The issue is now expected to move to court, with club members and employees preparing to challenge the eviction order legally. Staff members continue to wait for a final decision, hoping for clarity about their future and employment.
