Supreme Court plea seeks CBI probe into ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ campaign

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the online “Cockroach Janta Party” campaign, along with alleged fake advocates and fraudulent law degrees.

The plea says the controversy began after remarks made during a Supreme Court hearing were clipped, circulated online and turned into a satirical digital movement that drew heavy traction on social media.

The petition was filed by lawyer Raja Choudhary. He asks the court to act against what he describes as commercial exploitation of oral observations made in court.

Social media is all a-flutter

He argues, the issue is not criticism of the judiciary or protected satire, but the alleged misuse of court proceedings for publicity, branding, monetisation and trademark activity.

The plea says the courtroom observations were selectively clipped, taken out of context and converted into viral memes and other digital content.

LiveLaw reported that the petition also seeks directions against persons allegedly involved in “commercial exploitation.” It claims that, oral remarks made during judicial proceedings cannot be turned into commercial property or political branding.

The satire gathered speed

The petition arises from remarks made during a May 15 hearing in a matter concerning senior advocate designation, where Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made observations about professional standards and fake lawyers.

The court later clarified that the comments were directed at people entering professions through fake degrees, not unemployed youth generally. The “Cockroach Janta Party” emerged as a satirical online movement after the remarks were widely interpreted on social media. The campaign quickly gained traction through memes and commentary on unemployment, education policy and alleged paper leaks.

The plea reaches for a sterner reckoning

The plea impleads the Union of India, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Bar Council of India and the CBI as respondents, and seeks an independent investigation into alleged fake advocates, fraudulent law degrees, impersonation in legal practice and deterioration in professional standards.

It also asks authorities to examine claims of trademark appropriation and monetised circulation of courtroom observations linked to the campaign.
