Feeling drained by a friend? Why ‘friendship burnout’ is becoming common among Gen Z

Friendship burnout is rising as one-sided emotional bonds leave many mentally exhausted, pushing people to set boundaries for their own well-being.

Feeling drained by a friend? Why ‘friendship burnout’ is becoming common among Gen Z

Not every friendship ends with fights, betrayal, or distance. Sometimes, people slowly grow emotionally tired without even realising it. A bond that once felt comforting can gradually start feeling heavy, leaving someone mentally exhausted after every conversation or meeting. This growing emotional strain is now widely being discussed as “friendship burnout”.

Friendship has always been associated with comfort, trust, and emotional safety. The idea of friendship often goes beyond formal definitions. It is usually built on warmth, understanding, shared memories, and silent support. But experts say even close friendships can become emotionally unhealthy when balance disappears.

When emotional support becomes one-sided

One of the biggest signs of friendship burnout is emotional imbalance. In many friendships, one person keeps investing time, energy, and emotional support while the other remains distant or unavailable. Some people constantly depend on a friend to handle their sadness, frustrations, or personal struggles without realising the emotional pressure it creates.

Over time, the friendship stops feeling peaceful. Instead of feeling lighter after talking, people often feel mentally drained. Experts describe this as a form of “emotional dumping”, where one person unknowingly unloads all their stress onto another.

There are also situations where someone is always present during a friend’s difficult phase but receives little support in return. Slowly, the relationship begins to feel exhausting rather than dependable.

Small signs that often go ignored

Friendship burnout usually develops gradually. It can begin with irritation during conversations, emotional fatigue after meeting someone, or anxiety before replying to their messages. According to experts, feelings like discomfort, pressure, or suffocation around a friendship should not be dismissed casually.

However, experts also stress that every difficult friendship does not need to end immediately.

Why boundaries are important

Instead of completely cutting ties, maintaining healthy boundaries is often considered a better solution. Protecting personal space, limiting emotionally exhausting interactions, and maintaining some distance can help preserve both mental peace and mutual respect.

Mental health experts say friendship should not feel like a constant emotional responsibility. Space and balance are necessary in every relationship. Prioritising emotional well-being does not make someone selfish.

The discussion around friendship burnout is becoming more common among Gen Z, especially as many young people seek emotionally intense relationships while also struggling to manage emotional pressure in daily life.okok
