What is puffer-fishing? The red flag trend taking over dating apps

For many Gen Z users, dating apps no longer feel exciting or romantic. Instead, they often feel exhausting, confusing, and heavily shaped by online image culture. A new viral term, “puffer-fishing”, is now trending across TikTok and social media, describing how people exaggerate their personalities, lifestyles, or appearance online to seem more desirable while dating.

The phrase comes from pufferfish, sea creatures known for puffing themselves up to appear larger and more intimidating. In the dating world, “puffer-fishing” refers to people exaggerating parts of their personality or lifestyle online to appear more attractive than they really are.

What does puffer-fishing look like?

The trend can show up in several ways. Some users rely heavily on filters or edited photos, while others present an overly glamorous lifestyle on social media. Some try to appear emotionally detached, mysterious, or more confident than they actually feel in real life.

The issue begins when the carefully created online image does not match the real person.

Many Gen Z users say they have experienced dates where someone looked entirely different offline. Others shared stories of people who seemed emotionally mature and attentive through texts but appeared distant or awkward in person. For many, these experiences are making dating feel repetitive and emotionally draining.

Why Gen Z relates to the trend

Social media pressure is playing a major role in the rise of puffer-fishing. Gen Z grew up in a digital environment where appearance, validation, and online attention often shape confidence and self-worth.

Whether it is aesthetic Instagram posts, curated “main character” moments, or acting “unbothered” online, there is constant pressure to appear desirable. Some young users admit they exaggerate parts of themselves not to intentionally deceive others, but because they fear being seen as boring or “not good enough”.

For this generation, online identity is closely connected to real life. As a result, many relationships now begin with expectations built through screens rather than genuine interaction.

Is social media changing modern dating?

Many people believe social media has turned dating into something performative. Instead of focusing on connection, users often feel pressured to maintain an attractive online image.

The biggest problem with puffer-fishing is the disappointment that follows when reality does not match expectations. Over time, that gap between digital personality and real-life behaviour can leave people emotionally exhausted and less trusting of online dating.

While self-presentation is a natural part of attraction, constantly trying to seem perfect can make relationships feel less authentic. For many Gen Z users, modern dating is becoming exhausting, not because people no longer want love, but because they are tired of pretending first.
