Former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha has strongly criticised Hockey India’s decision to unveil a saffron jersey for the national team ahead of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup. For decades, Indian hockey teams have been recognised by their iconic blue kit, making the latest design a major departure from tradition.

While the exact shade of blue has changed over the years, the team’s primary colour has remained the same. The newly launched jersey for both the men’s and women’s teams replaces that familiar look with saffron, triggering debate among hockey followers and former players.

Rasquinha expressed his disappointment on X, saying the team’s identity should not have moved away from blue.

“I must say that the Hockey India has done many good things for Indian hockey, but this is embarrassing. The legacy & identity of the Indian team has always been BLUE. I wore the Blue jersey with pride for many years. Fans want to see our Indian team in blue. What is the logic of orange?” Rasquinha asked.

Hockey India explains the inspiration behind the new design

Hockey India officially introduced the new jersey on July 27 through a video shared on social media. The launch featured singer Sukhwinder Singh performing a patriotic song while the organisation explained the inspiration behind every element of the kit.

According to Hockey India, the saffron base has been chosen to represent courage, sacrifice and victory, drawing inspiration from the Indian national flag and the rising sun.

The organisation also detailed the remaining design elements.

“Saffron (kesariya): symbolises courage, sacrifice and victory. Inspired by the Indian national flag and the rising sun, it reflects new beginnings.

Mandala: inspired patterns celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage.

Blue accent: deep navy blue, inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, symbolises progress, peace, and focus.

Chest graphic: modern interpretation of the Sudarshan Chakra, symbolising strength, unity and momentum.

Tricolour piping (saffron, white, green):  along the shoulders and sides, reinforces national pride.

India: written in stylised Devanagari script, celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity.

Odisha: think India, think Odisha. It highlights Odisha’s commitment to Indian hockey,” the organisation stated. New jersey embodies the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat (One India, Supreme India,” the video explained the entire thought process,” Hockey India further explained.

Focus shifts to FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

Rasquinha’s criticism is centred on the jersey’s primary colour rather than its overall design or symbolism. The shift from blue to saffron marks a significant visual change for a team long associated with blue, and supporters will see India in a different look when the tournament begins.

India’s men’s team has won the Hockey World Cup only once, lifting the title in 1975. The women’s team is still searching for its first World Cup crown. As preparations continue, attention will now turn from the jersey debate to India’s performances on the field.
