Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Monday announced that head coach Stephen Fleming has mutually parted ways with the franchise, ending one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in Indian Premier League history.

In a statement, the franchise said, “The Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to mutually part ways, bringing to a close one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League.”

It added that “The decision was reached with respect and gratitude, following a series of open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management.”

Fleming joined CSK as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. After the team finished runners-up that year, the former New Zealand captain took charge as head coach ahead of the 2009 season, beginning a coaching stint that lasted 17 years.

A remarkable record with CSK

During Fleming’s tenure, CSK established themselves as one of the IPL’s most consistent teams. The franchise lifted five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 trophies under his guidance.

The team also reached the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and appeared in 10 finals, making Fleming the most successful coach in the tournament’s history.

Franchise pays tribute

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath acknowledged Fleming’s contribution to the team’s identity over nearly two decades.

“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence,” Gurunath said.

She added, “On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”

Managing Director KS Viswanathan also praised the outgoing coach, saying, “From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first.”

Fleming bids farewell

Reflecting on his long association with CSK, Fleming said, “18 years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.”
