A surprising behind-the-scenes story from the Big Bash League has revealed that Melbourne Stars tried to reunite two cricket legends for a special appearance.
The franchise reportedly made efforts to bring Sachin Tendulkar out of retirement so he could play alongside Shane Warne in the tournament.
Melbourne Stars planned a dream partnership
The revelation came through former Melbourne Stars chief executive Clint Cooper, who spoke about the franchise’s ambitious attempt during the early years of the BBL. According to Hindustan Times, the team wanted to create a major global moment by pairing Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne together on the same side.
Warne was already one of the league’s biggest attractions at the time and played a key role in shaping the identity of the Melbourne Stars. The franchise believed adding Tendulkar for even a single game would generate enormous attention for the tournament internationally.

Cooper reportedly said the plan involved convincing Tendulkar to return briefly after his retirement for “a one-time partnership with Shane Warne.” However, despite the excitement around the idea, the move never materialised.

Tendulkar had already retired from all cricket
Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket in 2013 after his final Test match against the West Indies in Mumbai. By then, he had also stepped away from other forms of professional cricket, bringing an end to one of the most celebrated careers in the sport.
The report noted that Melbourne Stars explored the possibility during a period when T20 leagues around the world were aggressively pursuing star power to expand their global reach.
