Hashmatullah Shahidi has stepped down as Afghanistan’s ODI captain, bringing an end to a successful four and a half year stint in charge of the national team. The left hand batter announced his decision through a statement, describing it as a personal choice made after careful thought. While relinquishing the captaincy, Shahidi confirmed he will continue to represent Afghanistan in One Day Internationals and remain available for selection.

Hashmatullah Shahidi took over the ODI captaincy in 2022 and led Afghanistan in 55 matches. During his tenure, the team enjoyed one of the finest phases in its history, highlighted by an impressive campaign at the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Afghanistan stunned several top teams, defeating England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands during the tournament. Those victories helped the side earn worldwide recognition and proved it could compete with the strongest teams in international cricket.

Shahidi also captained Afghanistan at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and played a key role in the team’s steady growth in the 50 over format.

New chapter begins for Afghanistan

With Shahidi stepping down, the Afghanistan Cricket Board will now look to appoint a new ODI captain ahead of the team’s upcoming tour of Ireland.

Despite leaving the leadership role, Shahidi will continue as Afghanistan’s Test captain and remains committed to contributing as a senior player in the ODI squad.

In his farewell message as ODI captain, Shahidi thanked the Afghanistan Cricket Board, his teammates, coaching staff and fans for their trust and support throughout his tenure. He said leading the national team had been one of the greatest honours of his career and expressed confidence that Afghanistan would continue to progress under a new captain.

His resignation marks the end of a successful leadership era and opens the door for a new face to guide Afghanistan’s ODI side into its next phase.
