Bangladesh produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Australia by 86 runs via the DLS method in the opening ODI of the three-match series in Mirpur. The hosts posted a competitive 284/8 before their bowlers dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, securing a memorable victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.
Tanzid and Shanto lay the platform
After being put in to bat, Bangladesh made an aggressive start through Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Tanzid struck a fluent 54 from 44 deliveries, while Shanto contributed a composed 67 to keep the innings on track through the middle overs. Their partnership helped Bangladesh recover from an early setback and establish a solid foundation.
Australia fought back with regular wickets during the middle phase. Nathan Ellis led the resistance with key breakthroughs, while Matthew Renshaw and Liam Scott chipped in to slow the scoring rate. However, Bangladesh found a late hero in Mosaddek Hossain, whose unbeaten 86 off 70 balls transformed the innings. Supported by Taskin Ahmed’s valuable 20-run cameo, Bangladesh finished strongly to reach 284/8 from 50 overs.
Nahid Rana headlines bowling masterclass
Australia’s chase never gained momentum as Bangladesh’s pace attack struck early. The visitors lost key wickets in the opening overs and were constantly under pressure. Cooper Connolly, Josh Inglis and Alex Carey all failed to convert starts, while the middle order struggled against disciplined bowling.

Fast bowler Nahid Rana emerged as the star with the ball, claiming four wickets and consistently troubling the Australian batters with pace and movement. Mosaddek also contributed with crucial breakthroughs as Bangladesh tightened their grip on the contest.

Cameron Green offered some resistance with a fighting half-century, but Australia slumped to 191/9 in 42.2 overs. Rain and lightning then halted play, and with conditions failing to improve, Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method.
The victory gives Bangladesh a valuable early advantage and continues their strong run in ODI cricket, while Australia will need a much-improved batting display in the second match to keep the series alive.
