The BCCI is preparing to introduce a formal policy for Indian cricketers who retire and then take part in overseas franchise leagues. The issue was discussed during a recent Apex Council meeting as the board looks to address a growing trend of players stepping away from Indian cricket before signing contracts with foreign T20 competitions.

The discussion gained momentum after several Indian players chose to retire from domestic or international cricket and subsequently joined overseas leagues.

Vijay Shankar is the latest example, having announced his retirement from Indian cricket before securing a deal in the Lanka Premier League. Over the years, players such as Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh, Unmukt Chand, Praveen Tambe and Irfan Pathan have also explored opportunities in foreign franchise tournaments after ending their Indian cricket careers.

At present, BCCI regulations prevent active Indian cricketers from participating in overseas leagues. This restriction applies to international players, domestic cricketers and those involved in the IPL. Only players who have fully retired from Indian cricket are allowed to compete in foreign franchise competitions.
Cooling-off period likely to be introduced
To prevent players from using retirement as a pathway to overseas leagues while keeping future comeback options open, the BCCI is considering a cooling-off period. Under the proposal, a player who retires and joins an overseas league may have to wait up to five years before becoming eligible to return to the Indian cricket system.

The Apex Council has reportedly entrusted the BCCI president and secretary with finalising the framework of the policy. While the exact details are yet to be confirmed, the move signals the board’s intent to create clearer guidelines around player retirements and overseas participation.
If implemented, the policy could influence how Indian cricketers plan the final stages of their careers. The BCCI believes the measure will help protect the domestic structure while ensuring that retirement decisions are made with long-term commitment rather than short-term franchise opportunities in mind.
