The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that The Oval in London will host the 2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, marking the fourth successive edition of the title clash to be staged in England. The five-day contest is scheduled to take place from June 9 to June 13, 2027.

It will be the second time that The Oval hosts the WTC final after previously staging the 2023 decider. The announcement comes as the race for a place in the championship match enters a crucial phase, with several teams still in contention.

The Oval continues as a major WTC venue

England has remained the home of the World Test Championship final since the competition began in 2021. The opening final was played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, where New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets to lift the inaugural title.

Two years later, the final shifted to The Oval, where Australia outclassed India by 209 runs to become champions. In the most recent edition at Lord’s, South Africa ended Australia’s reign with a five-wicket victory.

The Oval also holds fresh memories for India after Shubman Gill’s side defeated England by six runs at the same venue last year to draw the Test series 2-2. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna shared nine wickets in England’s second innings, with Siraj claiming a five-wicket haul in a match-winning spell.

ICC confirms England will host future WTC finals

The ICC reiterated that England will continue to stage the World Test Championship finals over the coming years.

“The ICC announced last year that England had secured the hosting rights for the next three World Test Championship Finals—in 2027, 2029 and 2031—with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) responsible for selecting the venue for each edition. With less than a year to go, the current World Test Championship cycle is entering its business end, with nine teams still in the race to secure a place in the final,” as stated by the ICC. 

Australia lead standings as race intensifies

Australia have established themselves as the team to beat in the current WTC cycle. They sit at the top of the standings with an 87.50 percent points percentage after winning seven of their first eight Tests.

Defending champions South Africa are second on 75 percent, while New Zealand remain close behind on 72.22 percent. Bangladesh have also strengthened their position after completing a 2-0 Test series sweep over Pakistan in May and currently hold 58.33 percent.

India occupy fifth place with a 48.15 percent points percentage, narrowly ahead of Sri Lanka, who are on 41.67 percent. Gill’s team has registered four wins and four defeats from nine Tests so far. Their campaign suffered an early setback after South Africa secured a 2-0 series victory in India last year.

Key Test series could shape the WTC final lineup

The ICC also outlined the upcoming fixtures that could significantly influence the standings.

“Australia (87.50% points percentage), having won seven of their eight Tests, sit comfortably at the top of the standings, followed by defending champions South Africa (75%).”

“New Zealand (72.22%) remain within striking distance of the Proteas, while Bangladesh (58.33%) have moved firmly into contention after completing a 2-0 sweep of Pakistan in May.”

“England (24.36%), West Indies (15%) and Pakistan (8.33%) have significant ground to make up if they are to force their way into the World Test Championship final at the Oval,” an ICC release said on Thursday.

“West Indies kick things off by hosting Pakistan in a two-Test series from 25 July, with both sides desperate for valuable points. Australia, meanwhile, will look to tighten their grip on top spot when they welcome Bangladesh for a two-match series starting on 13 August.”

“Attention then shifts to Asia as Sri Lanka and India lock horns in a two-Test series from 15 August, while Pakistan travel to England for a three-Test series spanning August and September,” the release further said.
