India beat 93-year-old Test record after defeating Afghanistan: What is it?

India produced a dominant all-round display to register a historic victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test at Mullanpur. The hosts secured an innings-and-300-run win, the biggest innings victory in India’s 93-year Test history, underlining their supremacy in red-ball cricket. The previous record was an innings-and-272-run win against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018. India also beat Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs in Bengaluru in 2018, while victories over Bangladesh in Mirpur (2007) and Sri Lanka in Nagpur (2017) by an innings and 239 runs complete the top five list.

Manav Suthar impresses on Test debut

One of the standout performers for India was debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. The young bowler made an immediate impact, claiming six wickets for 33 runs in Afghanistan’s first innings. His accuracy and control kept the batters under pressure throughout the innings as Afghanistan were dismissed for 152.

Earlier, India had taken complete control of the match by posting a massive 564 for 8 declared. The strong batting effort gave the bowlers a huge cushion and allowed them to attack aggressively. Suthar’s impressive debut performance quickly turned him into one of the major talking points of the match.

India seal record-breaking win

Forced to follow on after conceding a huge first-innings deficit, Afghanistan struggled once again against India’s spin attack. The visitors were bowled out for just 112 in their second innings on the third day.

Washington Sundar led the charge with four wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav picked up three as Afghanistan’s batting lineup failed to withstand the pressure. India’s bowlers maintained tight lines and never allowed the visitors to build any meaningful partnerships.

The comprehensive victory surpassed India’s previous record for the largest innings win in Test cricket. Under captain Shubman Gill, the team dominated every aspect of the contest, from building a massive total with the bat to dismantling Afghanistan with disciplined bowling.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi acknowledged that limited exposure to Test cricket made the challenge even tougher for his side. Despite the heavy defeat, he viewed the match as a valuable learning experience for his players.

For India, the result reflected the depth of talent available in the squad and highlighted the emergence of Manav Suthar as a promising option in the country’s rich spin-bowling tradition. The one-off Test ended with the hosts creating a new record and delivering one of the most commanding performances in their Test history.
