Tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers

India and England players wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence before the start of the third and final ODI at Lord’s on Sunday to honour Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away at the age of 89. Players, match officials and fans joined together to pay their respects to one of the greatest cricketers in history.

The BCCI confirmed that the Indian team wore black armbands in memory of Sobers, while England also joined the tribute. The minute’s silence was observed before the first ball of the match as a mark of respect.

Sir Garfield Sobers is widely regarded as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders. He represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets. His outstanding performances with both bat and ball earned him a place among the game’s all-time legends.

All eyes on series decider

After the tribute, attention turned to the series-deciding third ODI at Lord’s. England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bat first.

India made three changes to the playing XI, bringing in Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav, while Jasprit Bumrah missed the match after suffering a left knee injury in the second ODI.

The tribute highlighted the immense respect Sir Garfield Sobers enjoyed across the cricketing world, with both teams coming together to honour his remarkable legacy before the start of the match.
