A major shift could be on the horizon in India’s T20I setup. Reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the captaincy, while a Mumbai Indians star is being considered for the vice-captain’s role.
Leadership change under consideration
India’s T20I leadership structure could soon undergo a significant overhaul. According to reports by News18, the selectors are considering replacing current captain Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as part of a long-term strategy aimed at building the team for future global tournaments, as per News18.
The development comes despite Suryakumar leading India to T20 World Cup success earlier this year. However, concerns over his recent form and the team’s future planning have reportedly prompted discussions about a change at the top.

Iyer’s captaincy credentials strengthen the case
Iyer’s rise as a leadership candidate has been backed by his recent performances and captaincy record across domestic and franchise cricket. The middle-order batter has earned praise for guiding teams in high-pressure situations and has built a reputation as a composed leader.
Former Australia captain and Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting recently endorsed Iyer’s credentials, saying he is among the strongest contenders for India’s future T20I captaincy. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also publicly backed Iyer’s leadership potential.
Currently serving as India’s ODI vice-captain, Iyer is viewed by many within Indian cricket as a player capable of leading the side across formats in the years ahead.
Mumbai Indians star in line for deputy role
Reports further suggest that Tilak Varma, who plays for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, is being considered as Iyer’s deputy in the T20I setup. The move would align with the selectors’ reported focus on creating a younger leadership group while maintaining stability within the squad.
Tilak has impressed in recent years with his consistent performances and has increasingly been viewed as one of India’s key white-ball prospects. His inclusion in a leadership role would represent another step in that progression.
